Split washers tend to loosen up and stop working, and toothed lock washers don't grip that well. But Mission-Critical Two-fold self-locking washers are better—they lock more reliably, using both spring action and friction. Compared to locknuts with nylon inserts or all-metal ones, these two-fold washers can usually handle higher temperatures. Plus, they don't have problems with how well threads fit together.
Even though Mission-Critical Two-fold self-locking washers mean you don't have to tighten things as often, it's still a good idea to check important fastenings now and then by looking at them. Keep an eye out for too much rust, damage to the washer's tabs or little ridges, or any signs that the fastener has moved. If you take things apart, look at the two-fold self-locking washer—if the tabs are flattened or it's damaged, it's usually smart to replace it.
