The material grade of US round wing nuts is really important. Carbon steel ones are often called Property Class 8.8, following ISO 898-2. That means they have a minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa and a yield strength ratio of 0.8.
Alloy steel nuts might go up to Class 10 or 12. Stainless steel versions usually use Austenitic grades like A2 (304) or A4 (316), with their mechanical properties set by standards like ISO 3506-2 (for example, Class 70). Material certification makes sure these high strength metric round wing nuts work as they’re supposed to.

To make US round wing nuts last longer, there are some simple things you can do. Check them regularly for too much wear, rust, or thread damage, especially if they’re in tough environments. If bits of stuff build up on the threads, clean them with a wire brush.
Putting on a good anti-seize product (that works with the nut’s material and where it’s used) can stop them from sticking and make them easier to take off later, especially with stainless steel ones. Don’t tighten them too much by hand, or the wings might get bent. Storing unused ones properly also helps keep them from rusting.

How much load our US round wing nuts can safely handle depends on their size and material. For example, an M8 Grade 8 one can take about 30 Nm of torque and around 15 kN proof load. Detailed tech sheets have specific numbers for each size.
If you go over the rated limits, these nuts might get damaged. So always check the load tables.
